Here's what Jeff thinks the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to have a look at the big photo and predict what's simply around the corner. Long time readers of my work understand that I follow the most amazing tech trends on the edge of mass adoption.
These trends are experiencing exponential growth and creating amazing opportunities for financiers. I desire to make sure all our readers are gotten ready for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the image of what I see being available in the next 12 months 1. 5G Gadgets Our new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a topic I have actually been covering for years now.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted supply chains last year, a remarkable 250 million 5G-enabled gadgets were still sold. Particularly in the second quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, manufacturing hold-ups, and work stoppages. And all of this ultimately caused Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you think about all of that, offering 250 million units is remarkable. More notably, the hold-ups caused by the pandemic created a load of suppressed need. Which need is now going to be pushed into 2021. In reality, I forecast that more than 500 million 5G gadgets will be shipped in 2021.
Phase 3 of 5G When I have actually talked about 5G in the past, I've explained its three different stages. In Phase One, the infrastructure of these new networks is developed out, including all the new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will require. In Phase 2, 5G gadgets go on sale.
And in Stage Three, 5G services begin to be used. That's when we start to see applications operating on 5G networks. Think of things like huge multiplayer games over a mobile phone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my second 5G prediction for 2021 is that we will start Stage Three by this summer.
But they will care if there are exciting applications that can only be accessed with a 5G phone. So increasingly more consumers will go out to buy a 5G phone to access these applications. That leads to more 5G apps being established. In reality, 5G is going to open up a suite of unbelievable applications: self-driving automobiles, the Web of Things, robotic surgery, and more.
The investment opportunities going forward will be huge. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next essential innovation I foresee in 2021 is CRISPR genetic editing. It's one of the most amazing advancements in biotechnology.
